Abstract

897,653. Engine and gear-box construction. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. Feb. 27, 1961 [Feb. 26, 1960], No. 7044/61. Class 7(2). [Also in Group XXXI] The engine, change speed transmission gear and differential gear of a motor vehicle are arranged as a single structural unit, the change speed gear and the differential gear, the driving pinion of which is coaxial therewith, being arranged laterally beside or below the engine in the region between the front and rear main crank-shaft bearings, the engine crank-shaft being parallel to the transmission mainshaft. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a multi cylinder in line engine 10 comprising a crank-shaft 11, in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle, is inclined with respect to the vertical plane and is located above and beside the change speed transmission unit which drives the rear axles 26 through the differential gear comprising a crown wheel 22, planet gears and bevels 23. A gear 13 fast with the crank-shaft meshes with a gear 15 which is fast with the camshaft 14 and which drives a gear 16 from which the transmission is driven through a friction clutch 19. In a modification, Fig. 4, the differential gear is located between the friction clutch 19 and the transmission gear, the transmission mainshaft and differential gear input pinion 21 being hollow to accommodate the transmission driving shaft. The transmission input shaft and cam-shaft may alternatively be driven through the intermediary of a flexible drive, e.g. a chain or belt. The flywheel of the engine may be on the side remote from the cam-shaft and transmission drive. The change speed transmission casing 27, crank-case 12 and differential gear casing 24 may be formed as a one piece casting.
