Abstract

897,293. Stuffing-box substitutes. PULLMAN Inc. Oct. 14 1960, No. 35238/60. Class 122 (5). [Also in Group XXXII] Hydraulic shock-absorbers are provided with flexible tubular seals between the piston-rod and cylinder to eliminate the necessity for sliding seals. In one example the piston-rod 44 Fig. 3 and cylinder end wall 150 guiding the piston-rod 44 are sealed externally of the cylinder by a flexible tubular sleeve 18 of rubber, neoprene, &c. clamped at its ends by metal clips 42, 46 and adapted to roll over the pistonrod 44. Passages 66 in the end wall 150 permit surplus hydraulic fluid to flow freely into the sealed space formed by the sleeve 18 during the compression stroke so that the sleeve becomes inflated and acts as a fluid recuperator on the return stroke. In a modification, the seal comprises bellows 41, Fig. 13, arranged between the piston-rod 139 and piston guide 152 internally of the cylinder so that hydraulic fluid is prevented from reaching the sliding surfaces. Brass wear-rings 191, 193 are provided on the inner face of the bellows where rubbing may take place against the piston-rod 139. Passages 66 in the guide permit free flow of ambient air.
