Abstract

668,356. Piston and piston-rod packings. OLAER MARINE. March 31, 1950. [April 7, 1949] No. 3156/50. Classes 122(i) and 122(v). A sealing device between two relatively slidable parts 1, 5 comprises in combination a tapered metal member 9 which has a resilient sealing lip adapted to fit tightly against one part 5, and is supported in a member 3 having a surface extending along the geared portion of the tapered member 9 and terminating in a groove 4 adjacent to the resilient lip and an elastic O-ring 7 housed in the groove 4 and pressing against the part 5 and the resilient lip which latter prevents extrusion of the O- ring between the tapered member 9 and the part 5. In the piston rod packing shown, the tapered member 9 is a metal sleeve terminating at its apex in a resilient lip inwardly turned to bear against the piston rod. In another embodiment the sealing device is incorporated in the piston and the resilient lip of the tapered sleeve is outwardly turned and bears against the cylinder wall; the O-ring is housed in a groove in the piston.
