897,265. Automatic control systems. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. May 1, 1959 [May 1, 1958], No. 14892/59. Class 38 (4). [Also in Groups XVI and XXXVIII] Curvature is removed from a travelling web of paper by adjusting the position of upper and lower knife-edges relative to the web in accordance with any residual curl of the web as it is drawn under tension between two guides. A web of paper 12 is drawn by a drive roller 22 between friction rollers 14, 16 and over guide rollers 18, 20. Guide shoes 19, 21 bear against the web and define a fixed feed-path despite any eccentricities of the guide rollers. Any residual curl of the web between the shoes 19, 21 is detected by a pivoted fork 26 coupled to a differential transformer 34. The output of transformer 34 (which is energized by an oscillator 42) is amplified at 44 and passed to a phase-sensitive detector 48 which controls a reversible motor 56 via an amplifier 52 and saturable transformer 54. The motor 56 adjusts the upper and lower knife-edges 60, 62 to remove the curl. Excessive integrated errors operate an alarm and indicator (see Group XXXVIII). Specification 881,966 is referred to.
