Abstract
895,485. Control of motors; centrifugal switches. WEIR Ltd., G. & J. Oct. 6, 1958 [Oct. 5, 1957] No. 31234/57. Classes 38 (3) and 38 (5). [Also in Group XXVI] A centrifugal boiler feed pump 1 is driven by an electric motor (not shown). If, when a predetermined speed is reached after starting, the pump is vapour -bound and consequently fails to develop sufficient discharge pressure to pump water, a centrifugal governor 2, acting through one end of a lever 4, moves a link 10 towards the right to open a switch 6, thereby stopping the motor. To re-start the motor, a trip mechanism (not shown) must be re-set by hand. If, however, the pressure developed at a point 7 (not necessarily the discharge branch) on the pump has reached its normal value, it causes sufficient movement of a piston 8 connected to the other end of the lever 4 to keep the switch 6 closed. The switch 6 may be connected to the link 10 by a spring, as shown, so that it is not affected by the piston 8 moving too far to the left. In a modification, the centrifugal governor is replaced by an oil pump driven by the motor and applying a pressure which is a measure of the shaft speed to a piston in opposition to the piston 8, the two pistons being connected to opposite ends of a common piston-rod which is connected directly to the switch.
