Abstract

The invention comprises steroid compounds of the general formula <FORM:0876721/IV (b)/1> wherein R represents hydrogen or an acyl group derived from an aliphatic, cyclic or partly cyclic carboxylic acid containing not more than 9 carbon atoms, and the preparation of 4,11b -dihydroxy-17a -methyltestosterone by dehydrating 4,5,11b ,17b -tetrahydroxy-17a -methyl-4-androsten-3-one in alkaline solution, e.g. by means of a methanolic solution of potassium hydroxide, and if necessary, neutralising the alkaline solution, e.g. with acetic acid and, when required, esterifying the 4-hydroxy compound with the required carboxylic acid chloride or acid anhydride, e.g. in the presence of a tertiary amine such as pyridine. Esters mentioned are the benzoate, b -phenylpropionate, b -cyclopentylpropionate, acetate, and propionate. In an example 11b -hydroxy-17a -methyltestosterone is treated with osmium tetroxide and the resulting 4,5,11b ,17b -tetrahydroxy-17a -methyl-4-androsten-3-one is dehydrated as above to form 4,11b -dihydroxy17a -methyl-testosterone which is then esterified to form the particular esters referred to above.ALSO:A therapeutic composition comprises at least one steroid of the general formula <FORM:0876721/VI/1> wherein R represents hydrogen or an acyl group derived from an aliphatic, cyclic or party cyclic carboxylic acid containing not more than 9 carbon atoms, and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier therefor.
