Abstract

893,686. Forming fibre webs. CASSE, M. Jan. 12, 1960 [July 16, 1959], No. 1053/60. Class 120(1) [Also in Group VIII] Webs of short fibres are formed by a succession of stages in each of which the fibres are scattered in a closed circuit air stream and then deposited on a perforated wall, the fibres scattered in each successive stage being taken from those deposited on the perforated wall in the preceding stage. Fibres carried upwards by a lattice 12 are entrained in an air stream generated by a cylinder 46 that is formed with longitudinal ribs or strips. This air stream, which may have its characteristics modified by an adjustable flap 8, is caused to circulate on either side of a bulkhead 43 carrying a flap 45 that may be of rubber and is adjustable partially to screen a perforated drum 53 through which the air stream passes to deposit the fibres as a web on the drum. The web from the drum 53 is then carried forward by rollers 35, 36 to a toothed roller 77 from which the fibres are scattered into an airstream induced by a cylinder 79 and are carried to a perforated drum 75 that has its speed controlled by a governor device and is stripped by rollers 37, 38. The hopper feeder which incorporates the lattice 12 is mounted on wheels for separation from the web-forming portion of the machine and the upper part of the latter portion may be raised manually by means of toothed racks. A sprayer unit 92 may be arranged to inject into the second fibre-carrying air stream water, or an emulsion, or solution for binding the fibres together, or a powdered natural or synthetic resin binder. Heating means may be incorporated in the machine. The sheet of fibres emerging from the rollers 37, 38 may be dipped in an adhesive solution or emulsion containing bath, dried and pressed.
