Abstract

891,143. Forming fibre webs. GOLDMAN, J. H. June 26, 1958, No. 20551/58. Class 120(1) [Also in Group VIII] A mass of non-parallel fibres, such as of cotton, asbestos, glass, paper, wood pulp, or other natural or artificial fibres or blends of such fibres, is formed into a web having high tensile strength in every direction in the plane of the web by a method that includes passing the fibres over at least three rollers shielded to confine air currents and operated at progressively higher surface speeds, the last roller rotating in the opposite direction to those preceding so as to deposit the fibres in non-oriented condition on a slowly rotating condenser. A picker lap 10 is fed through feed rolls 11 and over a licker-in 12 to a card cylinder 14 from which the fibres are stripped by a fancy or stripper 16 and thrown on to a condenser roller 17 covered with rubber or wool. Shields 19, 20 enclose cylinders 12, 14, 16, 17. Fibres on the condenser roller 17 pass in contact with a wetting roller 21 to pick up water or a dilute adhesive, such as starch or latex, or a solvent for one constituent of a blend of fibres, or a chemical that will gelatinize or hydrolize the surface of the fibres. From the roller 21, the fibres pass between squeeze rolls 23 and around drying cans 24. An alternative method of removing the fibres from the condenser roller 17 employs a doffer comb.
