893,357. Welding by fusion. MITCHELL, SHACKLETON & CO. Ltd. Oct. 14, 1958 [Jan. 24, 1958], No. 2525/58. Class 83 (4). In a machine for welding together hollow main journal bearing parts of temporarily assembled portions of a crank-shaft in which the crank-shaft assembly is rotated under a submerged arc welding head, a control device driven in fixed speed relation with the rotating crank-shaft assembly produces relative movement between the welding head and the assembly after a predetermined angular rotation of the assembly. The welding head 6 may be secured to a beam 3 over any of the joints between the bearing parts 4. A motor 7 rotating the assembly also drives a cam 13 having a peripheral slot 15 engaging a follower 16 on the beam and moving the welding head 6 to deposit beads in side-by-side relation in the groove of the joint. The cam has a deep narrow slot cut into a wider shallower slot. The follower 16 is shaped so that by twisting it can be adapted to engage either of the slots. Thus the deep slot may be used to deposit a first bead in the apex of the groove followed by one on either side and the shallow slot may then be used to deposit three or more beads side-byside. The welding head may be moved away from the crank-shaft by a drive from the motor 7. The crank-shaft is located and supported as described in Specification 893,356.
