Abstract
893,226. Underwater escape apparatus. NEITZER, A. Nov. 4, 1960, No. 37948/60. Class 68(2). An escape apparatus for a sunken ship, especially a submarine, comprises a tubular guide 1, fixed to the hull of the ship, in which a cylinder 2 is slidably and rotatably mounted. A piston 3 is slidably mounted in the cylinder 2 and both these parts may be moved in unison or independently with respect to the hull by hydraulic or pneumatic jacks 4 and 5. With both parts 2 and 3 in their fully retracted position a lift buoy, which accommodates the crew, is allowed to enter the cylinder through a side opening. This buoy is released by passing both parts 2 and 3 in unison to the outside of the hull. After release water is expelled from the apparatus by withdrawing the cylinder 2 whereupon both parts may be returned to the inside of the hull for a second escape to be made.
