Abstract

892,197. Taper gauges. BURNERD & CO. Ltd., F. March 18, 1960 [May 8, 1959], No. 15870/59. Class 106 (2). A gauge for measuring the angle of taper of a frusto-conical surface 8 comprises two taperengaging members 2, 9 relatively displaceable axially and each engaging the surface 8 with point or line contact at three symmetrically spaced positions, and an indicator 16 disposed radially outwards of the axis of the gauge to indicate the axial distance between the taperengaging members 2, 9. The member 9 can slide on a shank 4 connected to the member 2 and is urged away from the member 2 by a spring 12. A pneumatic gauging head 16 cooperates with a plane surface 17 on the member 9 to indicate the separation of the two members. This head 16 may be replaced by a dial indicator gauge. The members 2, 9 are each provided with three equi-angularly spaced part-spherical surfaces 5 to contact the taper surface with line contact. These surfaces may be replaced by balls to provide point contact. A similar device for measuring external surfaces is also described.
