Abstract
856,502. Measuring internal and external tapers. HIRT, W. March 3, 1959 [March 5, 1958], No. 7274/59. Class 106 (2). [Also in Group XX] A taper gauge for testing internal or external tapers comprises three measuring heads 17, 16, 19 of graduated diameters and arranged coaxially at spaced intervals, one, 19 being arranged stationarily on the device, whilst the other heads 16, 17 are displaceable from an initial position along the common axis against spring means 26 and are associated with dial gauges (not shown) which indicate their displacement. As shown for gauging an internal tapered surface, the feelers 16, 17, 19 are mounted on an inner sleeve 5, a rod 6, and an outer sleeve 3 respectively. The sleeve 3 screws into the body 2 of the device and carries a pin 13. The sleeve 5 and the rod 6 slide relatively to the sleeve 3, their ranges of movement being determined by the lengths of slots 9, 11 in which the pin 13 is guided. The ends 22, 23 of the parts 5, 6 are in contact with spring-urged plungers 27, 28, the axial movements of which are transmitted to the dial gauges by levers 29. Before use, the springs 26 urge the parts 5, 6 outwards to the limits of their travel as determined by the slots 9, 11. The device is then inserted in a standard bore and the dial gauges adjusted to zero. When testing a bore, the device is inserted until the measuring head 19 contacts the walls [of the bore]. If the dial gauge corresponding to the head 17 does not then read zero, the overall taper of the portion BC is incorrect. If the two dial gauges have different readings, the points B, A, C are not collinear and the taper is either convex or concave, the deviation from standard being indicated by the difference between the two readings. A similar device for checking an external taper is also described (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown). If desired, the set of measuring heads 16, 17, 19, may be exchanged with another set for measuring a different taper.
