Abstract

891,738. Combustion chambers. RICARDO & CO. ENGINEERS (1927) Ltd. Sept. 21, 1960 [Sept. 22, 1959], No. 32268/59. Class 7(3). One or more cylindrical combustion chambers 10 formed in a piston of an engine in which the air rotates about the cylinder axis are inclined to the piston face so that the side of the chamber facing upstream is effectively undercut. The piston is shown formed with two recesses 10 with axes inclined in opposite directions so that the undercut sides 11 face upstream. The recesses are connected by a shallow slot 12 into which the tip of the injection nozzle 13 projects at top dead centre, the fuel being sprayed tangentially into the recesses on to the walls 14. In a modification a single recess is used. Specification 833,683 is referred to.
