[Also in Group XXX] Flat objects, such as biscuits, supplied continuously to a feeding device from which they are removed by a reciprocating ejector and fed to a packaging machine, are automatically diverted by means of a pivoted flap when the rate of supply exceeds the rate of removal from the device. As shown, Fig. 1, biscuits 3 are fed on edge from a conveyer 1 along a channel 4, over a flap 9 pivoted about an axis 10, and over a channel 4<SP>1</SP> to a vertical channel 411 from which they are removed by a reciprocating slide 7. If less biscuits are ejected than are supplied by the conveyer 1, the biscuits are forced into a position substantially normal to the channel 4<SP>1</SP>, thereby raising pivoted feelers 13 which close a switch to start a motor 22 to swing the flap 9 into alignment with a branch channel 11 feeding a conveyer 12. If there is an insufficient number of biscuits in the channel 4<SP>1</SP>, feelers 14 will drop thereby closing switches 20 in the circuit of a solenoid 26 which stops movement of the slide 7 by means of a pivoted lever 27. In a second embodiment, Fig. 6, the biscuits are fed to the conveyer 1 down a shoot 51, a rotating brush 57 imparting an additional impulse to the biscuits during the transfer to the conveyer. Feelers 13, on detecting an excess of biscuits in the feed channel 53 close a circuit to pivot up the flap 9 to deflect biscuits down a shoot 11 to the second conveyer 12. A section 54 of the feed channel is vibrated on pivoted links 56 by means of a support 60, secured to the section 54 and urged against a rotating eccentric 59 by means of a spring 58.
