Class 123(2) In a boiler feed pump installation of the kind including in series a condenser 1, a condenser extraction pump 2, a glands condenser 10, and a booster pump 11 leading to a deaerator 3 connected to the suction side of a feed pump 4 for the boiler 5, the absolute pressure at the suction side of the pump 4 is arranged, under normal working conditions, to be slightly greater than that prevailing at the suction side of the booster pump 11. Under these conditions a non-return valve 6 connected between the suction sides of the pumps 4, 11 is maintained in the closed position. If, owing to loss of static head or vapour pressure in the deaerator 3, the pressure at the input side of the pump 4 falls below that of the input side of the pump 11 the non-return valve 6 is opened so that feed water by-passes the deaerator 3 and flows directly to the fuel pump 4 at a pressure sufficient to prevent water flushing at the suction side of the feed pump 4. If desired other units may be interposed between the pump 2 and the deaerator 3.
