Abstract

891,141. Continuous-casting machines. GLACIER METAL CO. Ltd. Sept. 10, 1958 [Sept. 13, 1957], No. 28952/57. Class 83 (1). A continuous-casting apparatus comprises a die 7, having one end reciprocating in a molten metal bath 1 and the other end projecting from the bath and being cooled, and means 22 for holding the solidified cast metal during the inward movements of the die. The die is reciprocated by a lever 16a moving between adjustable limit screws 18 and connected to pivoted gripping jaws 13. A freely pivoted apertured bar 22 acts ratchet fashion to prevent inward movement of the cast bar 25. Water cooling rings 24, 24a are provided together with another around the bar itself. The rates of reciprocation and cooling may be controlled automatically. The process may be carried out under protective or inert atmospheres. Tubes may be cast by supporting a mandrel within the inner end of the die. The process is started by inserting into the die a rod having a socketed or grooved end.
