Abstract
Glycerol is prepared by the hypochlorination of allyl alcohol with chlorine in aqueous solution to produce aqueous glycerol chlorohydrins which are then hydrolysed with sodium carbonate to produce aqueous glycerol from which anhydrous glycerol is separated by vaporisation of the water and separation of the salt, the aqueous glycerol chlorhydrins from the hypochlorination step, before being submitted to hydrolysis, being neutralised with sodium hydroxide or sodium carbonate to a pH of about 4 to 5 and then fractionally distilled so as to remove impurities which distil out with water at temperatures up to the boiling-point of water. The glycerol obtained after vaporization of the water and separation of the salt may then be distilled to remove overhead unreacted glycerol chlorhydrins which may be recycled to the hydrolysis stage.
