Abstract
Hydroxy alkane alkane sulphonic acids are prepared by contacting aqueous solutions of their water-soluble salts with a cation-exchanger containing sulphonic acid groups such as acid Wofatits. The water-soluble salts may be alkali metal, ammonium, organic base, calcium, magnesium or aluminium salts. The resulting free acids, wherein a chain of at least 3 carbon atoms separates the hydroxyl and sulphonic acid groups may be converted into the corresponding sultones by splitting-off water by heating. The acid salts may be prepared by reacting allyl or other unsaturated alcohol with a bisulphite. In examples: (1) an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxy propane sulphonate is passed through a column of Lewatit S 100 and the effluent is evaporated in vacuo to remove water; the resulting 3-hydroxy propane-1-sulphonic acid is heated at 130 DEG C. under water-pump vacuum to give the sultone; (2) aqueous sodium 4-hydroxy butane-1-sulphonate is treated as in (1) to yield the free acid and then the corresponding sultone; (3) aqueous sodium hydroxypropane sulphonate is prepared by addition of sodium bisulphite to allyl alcohol in the presence of finely divided air and then diluted and treated as in (1). German Specification 887,341 is referred to.
