Abstract
1,204,514. Alkali paraffin sulphonates. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. 11 Sept., 1967 [10 Sept., 1966], No. 41409/67. Heading C2C. Alkali metal paraffin sulphonates having a low content of alkali metal sulphate are prepared from an aqueous extract which is obtained by the sulphoxidation of one or more n-paraffins having a chain length of up to 18 carbon atoms, wherein the main part of the hydrotropically dissolved paraffin is separated from the extract by addition of a low molecular weight alcohol containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms, the aqueous alcoholic solution obtained thereby being neutralized with an alkali and the precipitated alkali sulphate is separated. The alcohols are preferably ethyl or methyl alcohol and may contain up to 20% water. The alkali may be sodium or potassium hydroxide. The paraffin remaining in the alcoholic solutions of the acids may be extracted with a saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon having a boiling point of up to 120‹ C., e.g. alkanes of 5-8 C atoms.
