Abstract

888,357. Turning - gear. ALLMANNA SVENKSA ELEKTRISKA A.B. Feb. 15, 1960 [Feb. 17, 1959], No. 5259/60. Class 7(5). Means for starting an internal-combustion engine comprises a starting motor with an axially movable pinion 2, Fig. 2, for temporary engagement with an engine starting ring gear 1, characterized in that a shoulder, e.g. a circular disc 4 is provided on the shaft of the pinion and in that a blocking flap 5 hinged at 6 is so arranged that when the pinion 2 is in its limiting engaged position the flap 5 falls down to block the pinion in that position and also the flap is so arranged in relation to the shaft and its direction of rotation that the friction between the flap and the shoulder turns the flap back into its original position when the pinion is put out of engagement, e.g. by a spring, when the engine has started. On closing a contact 10, Fig. 4, a current flows through an auxiliary field winding 9 which produces a magnetic field that moves the pinion 2 into engagement with the ring gear 1. The flap 5 then falls into its blocking position, when a contact (not shown) interrupts the circuit through the winding 9. To start the engine a circuit breaker 11 is closed so that a current flows through a field winding 8 and the armature. When the engine comes to a standstill the contact 10 is operated and the pinion again engages the ring 1 and remains there until the engine is started again.
