Abstract

1381009 Starting I.C. engines NIPPONDENSO CO Ltd 1 May 1972 [30 April 1971] 20068/72 Heading H2H A system for starting an internal combustion engine comprises a starting motor 10 connectible to a battery 16 by an electromagnetic switch 14 which has a holding winding 13 and a winding 20 connectible to the battery via a series connected starting switch 15 and a series connected time switch 19 respectively, the time switch being arranged to interrupt, after a predetermined time beginning with the closing of the starting, switch, the supply to the winding 20. When the switch 15 is closed, current is supplied to the holding winding 13 and a shunt winding 12 which rotates the starting motor. Current also flows through a winding 21 to close a contact 25 and charge a capacitor 22. Closure of the contact 25 enables energization of the winding 20 so that a member 18 is displaced to close a switch 17 and connect the battery to the main winding 11 of the starting motor. When the capacitor 22 is charged the current in the winding 21 ceases, thus opening the contact 25 and de-energizing the winding 20. The member 18 is therefore released to break the supply to the main winding 11. The time switch may comprise a bimetallic switch, a thermal cut out or a semi-conductor switch.
