Abstract

887,740. Moulding shoe soles. CONTOUR MOULDED SOLE PROCESS CORPORATION. Aug. 6, 1959, No. 26990/59. Class 87(2). [Also in Group VII] A method of manufacturing footwear comprises cutting an outsole blank 20 from sheet material, preferably plastic material, the blank being of larger size than the upper 12 to which it is to be attached, moulding the blank under pressure about the upper 12 mounted on a last 26 so that it conforms to the shape of the bottom face 30 of the upper and the adjacent side margins 109 alongside, removing the blank from the upper after a guide 108 has been marked at the outline along which the blank contacts the upper and applying adhesive to the upper over its bottom face 30 and adjacent side margins 109 to the guide 108, the blank 20 finally being adhesively secured under pressure to the upper. The blank 20, particularly where this is of plastic, may be pinked along its periphery 22 as this facilitates the conformation of the blank to the upper. Where the blank is of leather, this is not necessary. A transferable marking substance, e.g. chalk, may first be applied to the marginal portions 107 of the outsole blank 20, some of this being transferred to the lower margins of the shoe upper 12 when the blank is moulded. Adhesive may be applied to the face of the moulded blank confronting the upper as well as to the upper when the outsole is to be secured. Where a thermoplastic outsole blank is used, it should be heated prior to moulding to render it more pliable. The last-mounted upper 12 is placed in position in a mould, Fig. 10, comprising a housing 36 having a cover 38 between which is disposed a diaphragm 46. This diaphragm is stretchable by the application of compressed air through conduit 54 to mould the blank 20 placed between it and the upper 12. The walls 62, 64 of the housing 36 slope inwards towards the bottom 65 for the purpose of directing the expansion of the diaphragm 46 laterally towards the upper.
