Abstract
887,613. Gauge glasses. YARNALL-WARING CO. March 21, 1960 [March 23, 1959], No. 9989/60. Class 123(1). The error in reading the level gauge of a high pressure steam boiler due to the variation of the temperature and density of the water in the boiler drum and in the gauge glass is compensated by providing heating means within the gauge glass which maintains its temperature close to that of the boiler. In the form shown the gauge consists of a body 27 having a cylindrical gauge passage 28 which is connected to the steam and water spaces 22, 23 of the boiler drum 21 by pipes 30, 33 respectively. The level in the gauge is observed through a series of pairs of opposite windows 36 which are covered by glasses 37, the glasses being clamped against gaskets 38 by a cover 43 which bears on Belleville springs 42. An oval-section heater tube 48 is located at one side of the passage 28 so as to be out of line with the windows. The tube has an open upper end 50 whilst its lower end is connected by a pipe 57 extending through a valve 58 to a connection 60 at a point in the downcomer 25 several feet below the connection 33. In operation steam passes continually down through the tube 48 to a condensate level in the tube 57 so heating the gauge water to boiler temperature. The heater tube also causes a circulation of the gauge water which causes a slight turbulence of the meniscus making the level more visible. Specification 815,955 is referred to.
