Abstract

887,168. Oxygen lances. CORNIGLIANO S.p.A. Oct. 29, 1959 [Nov. 12, 1958], No. 36731/59. Classes 51 (1) and 51 (2). In an open hearth furnace for the production of steel a separate supply of oxygen at a velocity greater than that of sound is supplied through a pipe 10 arranged beneath a gaseous fuel burner pipe 4 and a liquid fuel pipe 7. Valves 5 and 8 are provided for regulating the supply of fuel and a valve 11 controls the oxygen supply whereby the jet of oxygen in the form of a cone is regulated to proportion the oxygen to intensify the flame and for acting on the charge. The oxygen pipe 10 has a convergent-divergent nozzle, and powdered, liquid or gaseous material may be introduced into the melt by a pipe delivering into the centre of the narrowest part of the nozzle, or by two pipes delivering into the peripheral part of the oxygen stream in the divergent part of the nozzle. The liquid fuel pipe 7, gaseous fuel burner 4 and oxygen pipe 10 may be formed as a single water-jacketed assembly Fig. 1, mounted on the furnace so that it can be turned in the vertical and horizontal planes, or separately movable pipes may be provided for the oxygen and liquid and gaseous fuels. A single fuel pipe may be used. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 819,834.
