Abstract

A bath of steel and slag resulting from the oxygen-refining of iron is agitated by blowing with a stream of fluid containing or consisting of a combustible material, the fluid being not strongly oxidizing. The fluid may consist of a fuel gas, the strongly-reducing products of the combustion of a fuel gas with an oxidizing gas, a mixture of fuel gas with oxidizing gas, or a liquid or solid fuel in suspension in a gaseous medium consisting of or including an oxidizing gas. A multiple-passage lance may be employed where fuel and oxidizing gas are to be supplied, or the fuel may be precombusted in a burner to produce a gas stream of sufficiently high velocity. Liquid fuel may be atomized in a stream of steam, nitrogen or carbon dioxide prior to mixing with the oxidizing gas.
