885,613. Steering vehicles. RATEAU, A. Dec. 17, 1959 [Dec. 23, 1958], No. 42887/59. Class 79(5). A device for steering four wheels of a vehicle and for giving wheels on one side a greater amount of turn than those on the other comprises the wheels 51, 52, 53 and 54, steeringly pivoted upon shafts 55, 56, 57 and 58 rigid with sprocket wheels 59, 60, 61 and 62 about which passes a chain 63 also passing over sprockets 68 and 69 mounted upon a transversely sliding member 70. A rack 71 upon the sliding member is engaged by a pinion 72 rigid with a sprocket 75 engaged by a chain 74 which also passes over driving sprockets 73, 73a at either end of the vehicle, either of which can be rotated by a steering pole 76. Upon turning the pole the sliding member is moved to one side or the other as shown in Fig. 2 and the wheels are given different amounts of turn so that the vehicle turns about an instantaneous centre I. Chain tensioners 84 and 84a are provided for the chain 63. Worm wheels 82 and 83 are fast with the sprockets 68 and 69 and are driven by the worms 80 and 81 from a prime mover (hand wheel or motor 78), all being mounted upon the sliding member 70 so that the dirigible wheels may be turned independently of the steering pole 76. The latter may give extra rotation and may be used for setting all four wheels at right angles to the vehicle axis XX.
