919,576. Gearing for conveying rotary motion; rack-and-pinion gearing. BURMAN & SONS Ltd., and BRIGGS, W. H. Nov. 20, 1961 [Dec. 15, 1960], No. 43240/60. Class 80(1). In a vehicle steeping mechanism having a rotatable member 10 in screw-threaded connection with a nut member 11, a radial arm 13 on a rocker shaft 12 is formed with one or more teeth 14 engaging with a plurality of teeth 15 formed on the nut member, the latter teeth being formed along their edges 16 to a partcircular arc having an axis of curvature substantially parallel to the axis of the rotatable member 10, and the nut-member 11 being angularly adjustable about that axis. The connection between the rotatable member 10 and the nut member 11 may be a conventional screw-thread or a recirculating ball arrangement. Adjustment to take up slack in the rack-and-pinion mechanism 15, 14 is provided by a screwed abutment 17 which adjusts the member 11 about the axis of the rotatable member 10 thus different depths of meshing of the arcuate teeth 15 with the sector teeth 14, the centre of curvature of the teeth being parallel to and offset from the perpendicular plane passing through the axis of the member 10. In a modification, the centre of curvature lies in the perpendicular plane and adjustment is provided by two screws parallel to the axis of the rocker shaft 12. The mechanism may be combined with hydraulically operated steering gear as described in Specification 832,559.
