Abstract

885,449. Boundary layer control. WALLIS, R. A. Feb. 11, 1960 [Nov. 18, 1958], No. 37149/58. Class 4. Apparatus for re-energising the boundary layer of a fluid flowing relatively to a solid surface, irrespective of whether the boundary layer is attached to or has separated from the surface comprises means for injecting from the surface into the boundary layer jets of fluid having components of velocity transverse to the flow of the free stream and parallel as well as normal to the surface, whereby each jet generates a single strong vortex causing intermixing between the boundary layer and the free stream. Fluid is blown through passages 12, 14, which perforate the upper surface of the aerofoil skin 10 near the leading edge. The circulation and the core of the vortex produced by the jet issuing from passage 12 is indicated by 18 and 20 respectively. A wind-tunnel model incorporating vortex-generating jets is also described.
