Abstract

884,854. Gas-blast switches. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. June 23, 1958 [July 1, 1957], No. 20717/57. Class 38 (5). A gas-blast circuit-breaker with a resistance and auxiliary contacts in parallel with the main contacts is arranged so that the auxiliary contacts are controlled by the movement of the main contacts to open after and close before the main contacts. As shown, for one unit of a multibreak circuit-breaker, the fixed contact 1 is engaged by a hollow movable contact 2 biased by a spring 20 and having its end formed as a piston 11 slidable in a cylinder 12. A fixed tubular casing 7 surrounds the contact 2 and is apertured at 29 and at 28 in its fixing flange 9. A ring piston 26 has a trunk 27 slidable within the casing 7 and is biased away from a flange 30 on the piston 11 by a light spring 32. When pressure gas is admitted to the passage 6 by a blast valve such as that described in Specification 821,659, it passes through apertures 28 so that the piston 26 is moved to strike the flange 30 and move the contact 2 until the piston 26 is stopped by ends 34 of the part of the casing 12 in which it moves. Pressure gas also passes into the chamber 36 through apertures 29 and passages 35 in the flange 30, and when this is sufficient to overcome the spring 20 the contact 2 is moved further to the left until its end 21 seals the exhaust port 18. The auxiliary moving contact 40 is biased to the open position by a spring 47 and has a sliding pin-and-socket connection with a member 51 on the end of a lever 37 which is pivoted at 38 and carries a roller 52 engaging a cam surface on the piston 11. During the second stage of the contact movement the roller 52 passes down the surface 53 allowing the spring 47 to open the auxiliary contacts. Since the chamber 43 is in communication with the chamber 36, the contacts 40, 42 are surrounded by gas under pressure during their opening. When the passage 6 is vented to the atmosphere the contacts reclose, the auxiliary contacts making first and the chamber 36 being vented to the atmosphere at the end of the closing stroke through a port 12a in the cylinder 12. Passages may be provided between the flange 30 and the interior of the piston 11 to assist in this venting (Fig. 4, not shown). Specification 884,853 also is referred to.
