Abstract

A pressed and sintered material, for electric contacts or welding electrodes, has the following composition in atomic per cent: .Cu.48 -72 .Ag.0,5- 5 W and/or Mo the balance, and is made by pressing and sintering an intimate mixture of co-reduced compounds of the constituent metals or of co-reduced compounds of Cu and W and/or Mo together with metallic Ag in powder form. The compounds are preferably oxides and the metallic Ag may be added before or after reduction in cracked ammonia at 800-1200 DEG C. for 20-60 minutes. The resultant powder is pulverised, screened, pressed at 5-20 t.s.i. and sintered at 1200-1400 DEG C. in dry cracked ammonia for 1/2 -1\ba1/2 hours. If lubricants or binders are added to the powders a pre-sintering treatment is used.
