[Also in Group XXV] A combined edge-trimming and rolling device comprises a rolling appliance having two rollers 5, 5x as illustrated in Fig. 1, and an edge trimming device detachably connected to the stub shaft 10 of an adapter 9 bolted to the outer end of the roller 5x. The roller may therefore be used either with or without the edge-trimmer. The edge-trimmer comprises a casing 13 formed with a vertical cutting edge 14 and bearings 17, 18 for the spindle of a rotary cutter 15. Secured to the casing 13 is a sleeve 24 housing a stub shaft 21, and adapted to be slid over the stub shaft 10 until the latter is keyed to the shaft 21 at 23. Thus as the roller rotates, the cutter is driven from the shaft 10 by means of intermeshing bevel gears 19, 20. The sleeve 24 is held in position on the shaft 10 by means of a spring- loaded pin 25 engaging in a groove 11 in the shaft, the pin being formed with a recess 27 which, under the action of a spring 28, normally faces away from the shaft 10. On turning the pin through 180 degrees, the recess 27 may be passed over the stub shaft 10 and the edgetrimming attachment may be separated from the roller. This form of fastening mechanism enables the sleeve 24 to remain rotatable relative to the shaft 10, and the cutting attachment may therefore swing rearwards on encountering an obstruction. As disclosed in the Provisional Specification, the device comprises a rotary disc fitted with a number of cutting blades, co-operating with two, spaced fixed blades, and may be provided with a grass box, or with a ploughshare for turning the trimmings in to the sail.
