A pump or motor of the axially-sliding vanetype has a rotor 1 with tapered sides and containing vanes 13, in slots, the vanes having parallel sides 16 which coact with the parallel sides 21 of a stator built up of parts 17, 18, 19, 20. The stator may be tilted to vary the displacements of the chambers between pairs of vanes. The inner and outer edges of the vanes are curved and slidable on the inner curved edges of the parts 19, 20 and on hub sections 7. The whole is mounted within a housing 4, 5 carrying bearings 3 which support the rotor shaft 2. The rotor is keyed to the shaft 2 and clamped between part-spherical washers 7 by a nut 8. The stator may be tilted by means of two trunnions 30, 31 which may be actuated by e.g. a worm and worm-wheel. The trunnion 31 contains the delivery branch 39 of the pump. Inlet ports 34, 35 lead from a suction branch 36 and delivery ports 37, 38 lead to the branch 39. In a modified arrangement, Figs. 7, 8, 9 (not shown), for a motor, liquid under pressure is fed through both trunnions and the tilting means for the stator is positioned away from the trunnions. Two rotors may be secured on the shaft-one on each side of a stator so that end thrust balancing is secured.
