Abstract

<PICT:0893438/III/1> In the production of alkali or alkaline earth metal chlorites by reducing chlorine dioxide in aqueous solution with alkali or alkaline earth metal amalgam, the pH is maintained between 7 and 9 by the continuous or discontinuous addition of a dilute acid, preferably 0,5 to 5 N nitric acid. The sodium nitrate so formed is effective to prevent corrosion by chlorine dioxide. As shown in the drawing, an aqueous solution of sodium chlorite is provided with a chlorine dioxide content of 1,22 grammes per litre by blowing a mixture of air and chlorine dioxide therethrough and the solution is then circulated through a reaction vessel 2 and a separator 3. Sodium amalgam is passed to the reaction vessel 2 and separated in separator 3, whilst 0,6 N nitric acid is introduced to the circulating solution through valve 5. Product sodium chlorite is withdrawn, in an amount equivalent to the nitric acid solution added, through overflow 6. To avoid local over-acidification of the solution, the acid is advantageously rapidly distributed by causing a whirling motion or a strong current in the vicinity of the valve 5 where the acid is introduced.
