Abstract

881,256. Lightning arresters. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. Oct. 20, 1959 [Oct. 30, 1958], No. 3546/59. Class 38 (4). A lightning arrester comprises two discshaped separators 10, 12 of insulating material, preferably ceramic, reversibly placed face to face, each having integrally formed radially extending arc splitters 14 engaging with recesses 18 formed on a semi-circular raised portion 16. At the ends of each splitter 14 and recess 18 is a semi-circular depression 20 in which metallic balls 31 forming splitter tips are positioned. A raised portion 26 is received in a recess 24 of the other separator. A substantially triangularshaped opening 22 receives one electrode which is formed on a disc-shaped sheet (preferably brass) which encloses a permanent magnet 34 which may be of ceramic magnetic material such as barium ferrite. Flanges 32 between electrodes may be secured by means such as welding or brazing. When the arc is formed between adjacent electrodes the permanent magnetic field drives it into the splitters and recesses 14, 18 thus cooling and lengthening it. The use of ceramic material for the splitters is stated to give improved performance above that of metal splitters and the use of metal arc tips 31 is stated to improve the performance still further. Specification 814,509 is referred to.
