Abstract

847,499. Lightning arresters. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Nov. 16, 1956 [Nov. 18, 1955], No. 35120/56. Class 38 (4). A lightning arrester arc interrupting chamber comprises a plurality of air-spaced slotted plates 8, Fig. 3, arranged to lengthen, divide and cool the arc formed between gap electrodes 14, Fig. 1. In one embodiment the plates have one part 8<SP>1</SP> of magnetic material and the other part 8<SP>11</SP> of non-magnetic material such as brass, and are formed into a stack, with the electrodes 14 mounted in the slots 11. One or more stacks are mounted between non-linear resistor blocks 2 in a housing 1, having metallic electrodes 4 in contact with the resistors 2 and a spring 5. On a transient arc being struck across the gap 14<SP>1</SP> the magnetic field developed by the following power arc in the plates 8 forces the arc into the apex of the slot, where it is broken up and cooled by the plates, subsequently being extinguished at a current zero. Other types of magnetic plates are described, which are partly covered with high-temperature ceramic or other insulating material. Some of the plates need not have magnetic portions provided that sufficient magnetic field is developed by the remainder. Specification 698,583 is referred to.
