Fuel fed from a hopper A to a chamber B delivering fuel to a travelling grate G is swept by hot combustion gases from a duct D. Fine fuel particles are carried up a duct C and deflected by an adjustable baffle F to fall into a fuel bin E, whence the fines are fed to the grate G above the larger fuel in a layer the depth of which is controlled by the setting of a damper K2 and a gate H. The outlet of the fine fuel bin E may be closed by the damper K2, and the combustion gases and any fine fuel dust not deposited in the bin E are returned to the fire by a suction fan V.
