Class 34(2) In the dying of peat, brown coal, lignite or the like by the heat of the sun the fuel moves through a space confined wholly or partly by glass or other transparent or translucent material and hot or cold air is supplied. The apparatus consists of a room with glass roof and side walls in which the material 3 is moved on conveyers 5 from inlet 4 to outlet 6 where hot air is introduced. Alternatively the material falls over inclined plates 11 in a glass walled casing 8 having a heated helical pipe 12 (Fig. 2) and air is supplied and exhausted through openings 13, 14. In another alternative (Fig. 3) the material passes through a rotary conical glass drum 15 with inlet funnel 16 and vanes 17.
