A sealing device 11 for sealing an opening in a wall 16 separating high and low-pressure regions 14, 13 between which material 12 is continuously passed comprises a pair of sealing members 17 so supported on the wall as to provide between them a passage 18 for the material communicating with the opening, the passage being arranged to yieldingly open against the pressure in the high-pressure region while maintaining sealing relationship with the passing material. As shown applied to sealing the opening in the wall 16 of an annealing chamber 14 which contains pressurized steam and is fed with material 12 such as tow, the sealing members 17 are of resilient material and clamped together by two frame members 19 which are each formed with a recess 29 so that, when assembled, the portions 17a of the sealing members form the passage 18 between them. The assembled device is mounted on the wall 16 by bolts 32 which also clamp the inner flanges of the sealing members in position; the outer flanges of the sealing members are clamped by bars 39 against plates 23 forming part of the frames. In operation, the material is sandwiched between metal belts 42, 43 and fed thereby into the chamber 14, the steam pressure in this chamber acting on the resilient portions 17a and pressing them into sealing contact with the belts; similar sealing devices are arranged at the points where the belts pass cut of the chamber 14. The sealing devices may be used with other conveying means than belts, e.g. tubes or sheaths, or if desired, without any conveying means for the material. If desired, the region 14 may be at atmospheric pressure and a vacuum provided in the region 13.
