702,105. Sfuffing-box substitutes. SVENSKA FLYGMOTOR AKTIEBOLAGET. March 18, 1952 [Dec. 17, 1951], No. 6977/52. Class 122 (5) A seal between relatively rotatable elements such as a pump impeller 4 and its housing 3 comprises a ring 1 of rigid antifriction material urged into contact with the impeller 4 by a ring 2 of elastically deformable material of substantially U-shaped cross section axially movable under fluid pressure in an annular recess 6 in the housing 3, the shanks of the deformable ring pressing against opposite sides of the recess and the junction of the shanks abutting the rigid ring 1. Pressure fluid flows to the space in the groove 6 behind the ring 2 through a passage 5 connecting the groove with the pump chamber. The rigid ring enters the recess 6 and one of the rings 1 or 2 may have projections therein engaging corresponding recesses in the other ring to prevent relative rotation, or the two rings may be secured to each other by vulcanization or the like.
