Abstract
877,974. Pipe joints ; sewer pipes ; laying pipes. MELBOURNE & METROPOLITAN BOARD OF WORKS. March 3, 1959 [March 7, 1958], No. 7357/59. Classes 99(1) and 99(2). A pipe 2 of uniform external diameter throughout the length thereof has in each end face an annular groove 3 for the accommodation of a compressible jointing ring 7, and, in its outer periphery and at opposite ends, slots having laterally, or part circumferentially, extending steps or shoulders adapted to be engaged by ties 8 which span abutted pipes after the ring has been compressed. As shown, the slots comprise portions 4 extending longitudinally and leading to lateral portions 5 of greater depth, the junctions between these portions being in the form of an undercut shoulder 6, In laying the pipes, shafts are formed at appropriate positions and a tunnel is cut between the shafts, the pipes then being fed successively through the tunnels; a jointing ring 7 of one pipe is held in position by a removable locator and the ring is compressed by the next succeeding pipe, the locator then being removed, and the ties 8 being applied so that the pipes can be forced progressively into the tunnel. The slots are filled with a mastic composition, and each joint is tested by the introduction of compressed air into the pipeline.
