Abstract
A process of annealing cold worked low carbon steel in elongated form comprises rapidly quenching the steel from a subcritical annealing temperature to an age-softening temperature below 300 DEG C. coiling the steel, and allowing it to cool sufficiently slowly for age-softening to occur. The quenching temperature may be 200-250 DEG C. and the steel may be maintained in that range for 30-50 minutes. The steel may be heated rapidly to the subcritical annealing temperature e.g. to 670 DEG C. in 1-10 seconds and may be cooled to 600 DEG C. in 3-4 seconds before quenching. If the quenching is at a temperature above 250 DEG C. the age-softening should be performed in a non-oxidizing atmosphere.
