Abstract

Scale-free electrical steel laminations containing 0-4.5% silicon are treated by (a) heating in an oxidizing atmosphere, e.g. one containing water vapour and having a dewpoint of 100 DEG C. at a suitable temperature, e.g. 200-600 DEG C. to produce an oxide film, (b) heating further to an annealing temperature, which may be 700-900 DEG C., in an inert atmosphere, e.g. nitrogen, to cause decarburization and to develop the desired magnetic properties, (c) cooling, (d) applying an insulating coating. The latter may be brought about by interrupting the cooling at a suitable temperature, e.g. 200-500 DEG C., and holding the steel in an oxidizing atmosphere. The process may be continuous or batchwise.
