Abstract

898,955. Pipe couplings. EXACTOR Ltd. June 23, 1958 [March 22, 1957], No. 7808/57. Class 99(1). In a pipe coupling comprising end fittings 1, 15 connected to fluid carrying pipes and equipped with valves 8, 22 which are loaded to close automatically as the fittings are separated and which are opened simultaneoulsy as the fittings are engaged, the valves are formed with areas which are so proportioned and disposed that the fluid pressure acting on them produces a closing bias on the valves when the fittings are not coupled and that the forces exerted by the fluid on the valves are balanced out when the valves are unseated as the fittings are engaged whereby the opening of the valves is completed independently of the fluid pressure. As shown, the fitting 1 consists of a hollow barrel 2 having a spider 3 on which is mounted a flanged disc 5 formed with a conical valve seat 7 for engagement with the coned end 9 of the spring- loaded ring valve 8. The fitting 15 comprises a barrel 16 having a coaxial cup-shaped inner component 17 in which the spring-loaded ring valve 22 slides and which is vented to the atmosphere by a bleed hole 17<SP>1</SP>. The fluid flow space 18 is blanked off by a flange 19 secured to the barrel 16 and formed with a conical valve seat 20 for engagement with the coned end 21 of the vale 22. A resilient sealing ring 35<SP>1 </SP>is provided in a tapered groove in each valve seat. Alternatively, one of the conical surfaces of each pair of valve and valve seat is formed with a resilient tongue which seals the valve and is distorted to allow metalto-metal contact between the valve and its seat. For opening the valves, the end fittings are drawn together by rotating a handwheel 39 fixed to a sleeve 26 which is rotatably mounted on the barrel 2 and. is in camming engagement with the flange 19 so that the valves 8, 22 are simultaneously displaced by the disc 5 and the flange 19 respectively. In a modification, the disc 5 is sucured by a tie rod to a support connected to the fitting 1 by a pair of webs. Similarly the inner component 17 is integrally connected to the fitting 15 by a pair of webs. The sleeve for drawing the fittings together bears against a thrust roller bearing mounted on the fitting 1 and is in camming engagement directly in the fitting 15.
