Abstract

871,690. Piston rings. CROSS MANUFACTURING CO (1938) Ltd. April 22, 1960 [June 18, 1959], No. 20968/59. Class 122 (1). Piston packing comprises a springy steel helical ring 4 of L-section with one leg 7 mounted in a helical groove 2 in the piston 1 and the other leg substantially engaging the piston periphery. The leg 7 is resiliently slidable in the groove 2 to form a seal whilst the leg 6 acts as a bearing ring. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, rings 4 and 5 are mounted in helical grooves 2 and 3 respectively with their external legs 6 extending from the groove respectively towards and away from the piston crown. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the leg 6 lies in a groove in the piston having a radial depth less than the radial thickness of the leg.
