Abstract

566,488. Piston packing. CARLISLE, J. H. Sept. 24, 1943, No. 15694. [Class 122 (i)] A piston packing comprises split rings 1 expanded in an unrestricted manner and pressed axially into frictional contact with unsplit rings 2 by a compound spring 3a, 3b. The rings 2 act as bearing and centralising rings for the piston and, due to their frictional engagement with the piston walls, also act to clamp such lateral movement as is permitted by the small clearance between the inner periphery of the rings and the piston.
