[Also in Group XX] In measuring the internal taper 8, Fig. 1, of a workpiece W, the latter is mounted on supports 6, 7, and adjusted until the lowest generatrix of the taper 8 is parallel with a reference plane on the machine bed, as determined by a feeler gauge, the workpiece W then being tilted about the required taper angle and the deviations from parallelism with the reference plane of the highest generatrix being determined by a feeler gauge. A base B has a bed 32 which slidably receives a table 31 carrying, through supports 2, 3, a sine bar 1. An intermediate plate 5, which is pivoted at 4 to the sine bar 1, has grooves 15 in which slide screws such as 13 on carriers 11 for the V-blocks 6, 7. The V-blocks may be adjusted transversely to the cone axis by means of thumb-screws 12. A stationary column C has a slide 17 to receive an arm 20 carrying caliper jaws 18. The lower limb of jaws 18 has a double-ended feeler 21 and the upper extremity 22 bears against a point 23 on the end of a feeler pin 24 of a feeler gauge 25. A spring, not shown, normally urges the caliper jaws clockwise so that extremity 22 contacts point 23 of pin 24 and overcomes the pressure of a spring 27, but it may be put out of operation by adjusting knob 29. In use, the workpiece is placed on the V-blocks 6, 7, and the latter adjusted in the direction of, and transverse to, the cone axis until the feeler gauge indicates that at both ends of the cone the lowest point has been reached. A micrometer screw 16 is then adjusted until the lowest generatrix of the cone is parallel to the machine bed. An end gauge 30, corresponding to the desired taper angle, is removed, knob 29 adjusted to bring the spring into operation so that the upper extremity of the double-headed feeler 21 is pressed against the upper generatrix of the cone and its parallelism with the bed determined by moving the table 31 along the bed 32.
