In an arrangement for measuring variation in a complex resistance 3 (which may indicate the level of material in a bin), an ohmic resistor 5 is connected in series therewith and the voltage across the resistor 5 arising from alternating current sent over the line is rectified, smoothed, and fed back to a measuring instrument not shown at 2. The datum is set by an opposing rectified alternating current set up by circuit 7 at the instrument end. Modifications include the replacement of resistor 5 by a condenser or by the primary of a transformer having a rectifier in its secondary.
