Abstract

868,329. Valves. DOWTY NUCLEONICS Ltd. Sept. 2, 1957 [Sept. 1, 1956], No. 26777/56. Class 135. [Also in Group XXIV] A valve control unit for the operation of, e.g., an overdrive on a motor vehicle, comprises an electrically-operated hydraulic control valve and a pressure-relief valve included in a single valve body 41, the latter having a ported fiat face clamped by a pair of bolts passing through holes 67 to a correspondingly ported flat face on the overdrive casing. Ports 64, 65, 66 between the flat faces, connected respectively to a liquid pressure source, a jack operating the overdrive clutch, and drain, are controlled by a pair of loose-ball valves 71, 72 and interconnecting rod 74 operable by a rod 56 connected to an armature 54 by a leaf-spring 61. On energization of a solenoid coil 53, the armature 54 is moved leftwardly against a further leaf-spring 58 to connect the pressure port to the jack. To prevent the generation of excessive supply pressure a spring-loaded relief valve S1 is fitted, which when open connects the pressure port 64 to a further drain port 63. In the Provisional Specification an embodiment is described in which the relief valve is omitted and the pressure, jack and drain ports are controlled by a single loose-ball valve.
