Abstract

867,426. Batteries. OLDHAM & SON Ltd., and MORTON, H. Nov. 14, 1958 [Dec. 13, 1957 ; April 3, 1958], Nos. 38908/57 and 10909/58. Class 53. An accumulator consisting of a number of cells 1 arranged in rows is provided with gasremoving means comprising a tube 19 passing through the battery casing 22, and open to the atmosphere at one end 20, the other end 21 leading to a receptacle 25 containing a neutralizing liquid and having a gas exit tube 26 incorporating an extraction pump 27. The tube 19 is connected by elbows 18 to the cells 1, each of which is provided with a vent-plug 5 which is received in an opening in the bottom of a trough 7 formed in the cover 2 of the cell. The troughs extend the full width of the cells to form a continuous channel in which the vent plugs are located. Each channel is closed. at the top by two strips 12 of flexible material, Fig. 4, which are cemented to rigid strips 9 cemented to the tops of the cells. The strips 12 are formed with openings slightly smaller than the heads of the vent plugs which are therefore gripped by the said strips as shown in Fig. 4. The battery is closed by a cover 15 which presses on the strips to ensure gastight joints. The cover has openings through which the vent-plugs can be withdrawn. The elbows 18, Fig. 1, connect the pipe 19 to the ends of the channels 7. In Fig. 1 the two rows of cells are joined to the pipe 19 in parallel; they may alternatively be joined in series, or the open end 20 may be dispensed with, each of the channels 7 corresponding to a row of cells being open to the atmosphere at the end opposite to the elbows 18. In a further inodification each elbow has two openings leading into each channel 7, one opening having a tube which extends to the further end of the channel which is closed.
