Abstract

1364283 Lead-acid cells GATES RUBBER CO 2 Aug 1971 [3 Aug 1970] 36142/71 Heading H1B A lead-acid cell having no free electrolyte comprises a spirally-wound assembly consisting of positive and negative electrodes 11 and a separator 14. The electrolyte is present in a starved amount so that nearly all of it is absorbed in the separator and only a thin film is present on the electrodes. The electrodes are formed of expanded lead grids which are pasted with active material. The preferred separator material is fibreglass. The spiral assembly is held under pressure in a steel casing 15 having an insulating lining 18 of plastics material. The negative electrode has a greater capacity than the positive electrode so that negligible hydrogen is evolved and the oxygen is removed by reacting with the active material on the edges of the negative electrode. Above a certain pressure oxygen is released from the cell by a resealable valve 23 and vent 32. Droplets of electrolyte entrained in the oxygen escaping through the valve 23 are absorbed in sodium bicarbonate 26. current from the positive and negative electrodes 11 is conveyed, respectively, to a metal cap 19 and the casing 15, by corresponing tabs 17 positioned at intervals along the electrodes. In a modification (Fig. 3, not shown) the electrodes and separators form a stack of flat sheets.
